Cha Kee (Hong Kong style cafe)

Hearing that there was a new Hong Kong style cafe, we could not wait till the weekend to go and try. This new place is in the same shopping centre complex as the recently opened Hakataya Ramen branch.

“Cha Kee” falls into the Hong Kong Style Cafe category, which is typically a cheap, casual eating place frequented by people who live locally. In Hong Kong, you can typically find one of these at every corner filled with loyal locals. Sort of like western coffee shops. “Cha” means tea and “Kee” means “Mr” (usually named after the owner) or a “place” like “-ya” in Japanese. In this case, it is more likely to be the latter, as we doubt the owner is called Mr Cha or Mr Tea.

Upon entering we were served promptly and politely taken to the table (Good job!). We were presented with the menus (The words on the menu were a bit small). Typical of Hong Kong Cafes, there is usually a daily lunch special – an option of two different mains including drinks. These options change every day. They are usually labelled as meal set “A” and meal set “B” for ease of ordering. The daily specials on the day were:

A: Beef in Curry sauce with rice

B: Chicken Fillet in Black Pepper Sauce with rice / spaghetti. (The rice or spaghetti part might sound weird, but believe me it is very common in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong you can also have macaroni in soup for breakfast)

When ordering you would usually say either “Meal Set (A/B) and (your drink preference) please!”. Therefore in our case, we said “Meal Set A with a Cold lemon tea”. Cold drinks usually cost an extra 50 cents, so be mindful : D. Iced Lemon Tea is a favourite of Hong Kong regulars and is a good test of a good Hong Kong style cafe. We also ordered a House special stir fried vermicelli.

It took a long period of time for both the mains and the drinks to come out – at least 40 minutes. One of our mains was served to the wrong table and therefore we had to wait another 10 minutes for it to be remade. Seeing as they had only recently opened, we could tell there might be some operational issues that might need to be ironed out : ). The lovely lady was very apologetic about the situation so we did not mind waiting. We were entertained by the beautiful interior and the shows on the TVs at the back of the shop.

Like we were saying before, the Iced Lemon Tea is a good test of a good HK styled cafe. The Iced Lemon Tea arrived and it tasted great – fresh sliced lemon with a deep brewed tea. We liked it. The tea had a good “gip” taste which is great.

The mains arrived:

First to arrive was the “Beef in curry sauce on rice”. It was presented well with generous beef slices. It was above average, but the dish did not really have any “wow”. We found the curry to be a bit too bland and runny. It was different to the typical HK curry as well. Chinese cooks usually tenderize meat by either using baking soda or an egg-white/cornstarch mixture (velveting). Unfortunately, in this case the beef had been over-tenderize to the extent where it did not taste like beef anymore.

The dish above is the House Special stir fried vermicelli. While waiting, we were wondering whether it was going to be stir fried properly or was it going to be a braised style imitation. When it arrived, we were pleasantly surprised as it was stir fried perfectly. The noodle was not soaked in sauce and it tasted good. We found this dish to be better out of the two, however again the meat in the dish was over tenderize. There is something wrong when you cannot tell whether the meat in the dish is chicken or pork : ).

Service is very welcoming and quick but missing some minor things – some table water would have been nice. Other than that, the experience was above average. We see the staff at this place willing to improve – continue to work hard and hopefully we come back to an even better place.  We rate it a 6.5 out of 10.

We will definitely return again and look forward to giving a higher score.

Mr Curry (Toowong)

We decided to head to Toowong Shopping Centre, hearing that the renovations had recently been completed and to escape the Brisbane heat. We were certainly impressed with the transformation, from an old, dated design with it’s tacky gold plated panels to a modern, clean and stylish shopping centre. Well done!

A new addition to the food court area is “Mr Curry”. Same name and owner as the “Mr Curry” in Post Office Square Brisbane CBD – the staple of many CBD workers with it’s $5 lunch special. We went ahead and ordered the Spicy Chicken Curry with Salad Medium for $7.50.

It certainly looks great – with it red pickles, salad mix, deep fried chicken and moist short grain rice with it’s rich spicy curry. It certainly tasted great for a lunch under ten dollars. The curry gravy was rich and spicy, but not too spicy to cover any curry taste.  The only remark we had, was the spicy chicken. Similar to the CBD branch, the chicken lacks a marinade. Therefore, it does tastes quite plain. We were sort of expecting the chicken to be like a good karaage chicken – soy marinaded with a hint of ginger, mirin and garlic. It could have been a bit more crunchy as well.

The service was fast and efficient. Overall it was a great tasty lunch for it’s value. If you like it more spicy, you can add Seven Spice Powder (Shichimi Togarashi) which is available at the food pick-up corner.

More on the shopping centre transformation, the deli and vegetable shops have merged into one and the shopping centre seems to have grown in retail space. A lot of shops are still in the process of opening and with a new restaurant precinct about to open featuring favourites like Grill’d, GYG, San churros and Tibetan Kitchen. It would be good to see a bit more variety, rather than the typical shopping centre restaurants… *wink wink*… maybe a PappaRich : ), but we look forward to trying the new additions.

There is a Asian supermarket at the top floor of the shopping center called Markets of Asia. It is well stocked, reasonably priced and worth a visit whilst you are there.

Genkotsu Ramen

Last week, we went to Genkotsu Ramen in Runcorn. It took us a while to find the place as it is actually quite a small shop hidden at the end of the parking lot.

With most new restaurants, we usually prepare ourselves by setting low expectations. This way we do not become too disappointed if it does not meet our standards. However with this Ramen place, we were pleasantly surprised, and it far exceeded our expectations. Upon arrival for lunch, we noticed a line already forming outside. This line did not last very long as we noticed that each customer was served quickly – definitely a sign of a good ramen place. Ramen is a fast food in Japan and therefore service should be fast!

We ordered the Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen, Miso Ramen and a serving of Gyoza. We had to order the Miso Ramen as we had an amazing Miso Ramen in Sapporo last year (http://ramen.walkerplus.com/detail/m01076142) and we have been trying to find the wonderful taste ever since. Before, we were diehard hakata style tonkotsu ramen fans.

Both Ramen were tasty and authentic. You can taste the Black Garlic in the Tonkotsu Ramen! The noodles were not too soft. They were firm enough to give a good springy texture and no noticeable uneven lengths. The pork was soft and flavourful. The broth was rich and thick and the egg was perfectly cooked with a gooey yellow orange center and marinated as it should.

The gyoza was crispy but the filling was lacking. We both found that there was too much cabbage in the gyoza leading to them being too soft and lacking texture and taste. Definitely room for improvement here.

The service was wonderful – fast and efficient just like a ramen place should be. We were reminded of our wonderful eating adventures in Japan – with the warm Japanese welcome and thank you at the end. The price was excellent, around $9.50 to $13 per bowl of ramen. Places should not charge more per bowl as Ramen is not supposed to be an expensive food – it is a shame that other places think they should be entitled to charge more : (. A welcome addition to the Brisbane ramen dining scene and hopefully more ramen places!

I rate this place 4.5/5. We will be returning soon.
